How to Prepare for Your Outdoor Family Photo Session | San Jose Family Photographer

As your San Jose family photographer, I want my clients to have enough information to help them feel prepared before the day we take photos. So in this post, I’ll tell you how to prepare for your outdoor family photography session in San Jose!

One of my main priorities for your lifestyle family photo session is to keep everything as simple and as stress-free as possible! I think having enough info ahead of time can help cut down on the stress and anxiety leading up to your photo session.

What do we wear?

KEEP IT SIMPLE AND COMFORTABLE

Please do not make yourself crazy trying to buy everyone new matching outfits in the weeks and days leading up to your session! I always tell moms to check your closets first! There is a good chance you already own the “perfect” outfits. And if you really feel the need to buy something, then go ahead and get a new outfit for yourself.

I always encourage families to put comfort first. I prefer that you dress closer to what you dress like the other 364 days of the year rather than dressing up way more than you usually do.

Some tips…

-please avoid matchy-matchy clothing. (aka everyone in white shirts and khaki pants or jeans) Instead, pick a color palette of 3 or 4 coordinating colors. I will also send you the clothing style guide and some Pinterest links to help you.

-Limit patterns like florals, stripes, and plaids to one or two family members and put everyone else in a solid color.

-Avoid clothing with large logos or characters and avoid neon/fluorescent colors.

-Layers are great when the temps are cooler.

And once again, put comfort over fashion. I don’t want your son annoyed by an itchy sweater or tie he would not normally wear or your daughter fussing over uncomfortable shoes or a dress she is not used to. And if they do wear a dress or skirt, I recommend they also wear shorts under it.

Or in my case, do not make your husband and sons wear pastel button-down shirts and khakis (or a suit jacket etc.) if they never actually wear these things in real life! (they still bring this up 5 years later!)

I even encourage allowing your kids to help make some choices when it comes to what they will be wearing!

Talk about the family photo shoot

Weeks before your portraits, you can get your family excited for your big photo day.  You can tell your kids how fun it’s going to be and why it’s so special and important to have your family photos taken.  Another great idea is to have your family try on the clothes before the big day.  You can even make a game out of it and pretend to be models on the catwalk!  Make sure the clothes fit properly and are comfortable.  On the day of the shoot, ensure the kids are well-rested and have full tummies.

Get ready to play games during the photo shoot!

This is the most important tip of all!  No matter if your outfits are Pinterest-perfect, if you have the most magical lighting, or you are in a jaw-dropping location, none of it will matter if the children are miserable and not enjoying themselves.  So, get ready to be silly.  Have some games ready for the kids and parents to play.  This may include playing tag, throwing leaves, or singing their favorite songs.  The games will lighten the mood and keep the kids entertained and smiling.  A thrilling aspect of family photography is capturing the family interacting with each other.  Not every photo has to have each member of the family looking straight at the camera.

Should we bring anything?

Although I encourage you to feed everyone before the session, feel free to bring a snack and a drink for your child(ren), especially for the little ones. It is more than ok to pause for a few minutes, especially if it is a hot day or they just need to take a short break. Just maybe don’t mention said snacks to the children and just surprise them when they are needed.

If you have a little one, it’s ok to bring your stroller along to shove the diaper bag in (make sure to have diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes because we know babies can have blowouts at the least opportune times!)

The stroller is also a great place to stash your keys and cell phones! Let’s avoid having your pockets bulging with phones and keys!

And it’s okay to let your child bring along a favorite toy or blanket that they are attached to. I think this will help keep them calm and I would love to include this special item in the photos! And having their favorite stuffed animal, toy car, etc. can also help me get some smiles out of the little ones.

So, relax, I’ve photographed hundreds of families and I assure you that our session will be fun. And I promise you that you’ll treasure the memories that I will capture for you!

Welcome to my blog, where I'll be sharing tips and ideas for what to wear for your family photography session.

Family photography is an excellent way to capture beautiful moments with your loved ones. Whether it's for a family photoshoot or family portraits, having the perfect outfit can make all the difference in the final result.

If you're planning a fall family photoshoot in Bay Area it's important to keep in mind the weather conditions. San Jose's autumn is generally mild, but it can still get chilly during early morning or evening hours. So, it's best to layer your clothing to ensure your family stays warm and comfortable.

To begin with, you want to select a color palette that will complement each other's outfits. A popular choice for fall family photos is to go with warm tones such as burgundy, burnt orange, mustard, navy, or forest green. The key is to choose colors that look good on everyone and complement the surroundings.

For parents, a solid colored blouse or dress, paired with jeans or khaki pants, can make for a classic look. Moms can accessorize with statement jewelry and a scarf to add a pop of color to the outfit. Dads can complete their look with a blazer or sweater, which adds an extra layer of warmth and sophistication.

For children, it's best to keep it simple and comfortable. A cute sweater or dress with leggings for girls, and a collared shirt or polo with jeans for boys, make for a timeless look. Avoid any bold patterns or logos that may distract from the family's overall aesthetic.

Footwear is also an essential part of the outfit. For fall family photos, closed-toe shoes or boots work best. For moms, low ankle boots or flats are a great option. For dads and children, brown or black leather shoes work well and complete their outfits.

Lastly, hair and makeup should also be considered. Keeping it simple and natural is always best. Moms can wear their hair down or in a classic bun, while dads can have a clean-shaven look or trimmed facial hair. Children should have neat and tidy hair.

In conclusion, choosing the right clothing and accessories for your San Jose family photo shoot can make all the difference in the final result. Remember to select a color palette that complements each other's outfits, dress in layers, wear comfortable footwear, and keep hair and makeup simple. With these tips in mind, you'll be sure to capture beautiful memories that you'll cherish for years to come.

As a Bay Area Family Photographer, I am passionate about capturing families and their unique stories through my lens. Family photography is a special and intimate art form that tells the story of families and their love for each other. Whether you’re looking to capture a family portrait or to document your family’s growth over time, family photoshoots can be a great way to create memories that will last a lifetime.

When it comes to family photoshoots, the most important factor is making sure everyone is comfortable and relaxed. This is especially important when there is a baby involved. Babies can be unpredictable, so it’s important to be prepared and have a plan in place to make sure the photoshoot goes smoothly.

Bay Area Family Photographer

Here are some tips to help you have a successful family session with a baby:

  1. Plan ahead! When planning a family photoshoot, it’s important to think about what you want to capture and what kind of photos you want to create. For example, do you want to capture a family portrait, individual portraits of each family member, or a combination of both? Planning ahead will help you create a vision for your photoshoot and ensure that you are getting the photos you want.

  2. Choose the right time! Babies have a natural rhythm and it’s important to choose a time when they are happy and relaxed. This is usually just after a feeding or nap time.

  3. Make the environment comfortable! When it comes to family photoshoots, comfort is key. Make sure the environment is comfortable for both you and the baby. This includes having a quiet and comfortable area to take photos in and having plenty of blankets available to keep the baby comfortable and relaxed.

  4. Be patient! Babies are unpredictable and it’s important to be patient and understanding. Don’t get frustrated if the baby is fussy or doesn’t cooperate. Instead, take a break and try again later.

  5. Use toys! Toys can help add interest to your family photos and create a more relaxed atmosphere. Consider using props like toys, stuffed animals, and blankets to keep the baby entertained and comfortable.

  6. Focus on connection Family photoshoots are all about capturing the love and connection between family members. When taking photos with a baby, focus on the connection between the baby and their parents, siblings, and grandparents. Try to capture moments of interaction, such as the baby being held, snuggled, and kissed.

  7. Get creative Family photoshoots don’t have to be serious and formal. Have fun with your family and try to capture natural, candid moments. This is where creativity comes in and can help you capture unique and memorable photos.

In conclusion, family photoshoots with a baby can be a wonderful and meaningful experience. With a little planning and patience, you can create beautiful family portraits that will last a lifetime. Whether you’re looking for family pictures to display in your home, or to share with friends and family, family photoshoots are a great way to create memories that will be cherished for years to come. As a Bay Area Family Photographer, I am passionate about capturing these moments and helping families create memories that they will treasure forever.

Family photography is not just about taking pictures, it’s about capturing memories and telling stories that will last a lifetime. In today’s blog post, I want to share a family photo shoot I recently did at the Palo Alto Cactus Garden.

The Palo Alto Cactus Garden is a hidden gem in the heart of Palo Alto, and a perfect location for a family photo shoot. The garden is filled with an abundance of cacti and succulents of all shapes and sizes, providing a stunning backdrop for family photos. The light in the garden is soft and beautiful, making it the perfect place for capturing family memories.

The cacti and succulents in the garden add a touch of whimsy and playfulness to the photos, which is perfect for families with young children.

In order to make the family photo shoot as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, I took the time to get to know each family member before the shoot. This helped me to capture the family’s unique dynamic and ensure that each family member was comfortable during the shoot.

During the family photo shoot, I encouraged the family to interact and have fun together. I captured candid moments of the family laughing, playing, and simply being themselves. These are the moments that truly reflect the family’s bond and bring their memories to life.

In addition to capturing the family’s dynamic, I also made sure to take individual portraits of each family member. These portraits are important for families to have, as they showcase each person’s unique personality and beauty. I took the time to find the perfect angles and lighting for each portrait, ensuring that each family member was showcased in the best possible light.

At the end of the family photo shoot, I was thrilled with the results. The family was overjoyed with the photos and I was able to capture their memories and personalities in a way that they will treasure for years to come.

As a professional Palo Alto, CA family photographer, I understand the importance of capturing memories that will last a lifetime. A family photoshoot is a time to come together, have fun and freeze a moment in time that can be cherished for years to come. I recently had the privilege of capturing a beautiful family session in Stanford Cactus Garden and wanted to share some tips and insights about making the most of your family photoshoot experience.

The cactus garden provided a unique and visually stunning backdrop for the photoshoot. The vibrant colors and textures of the cacti created a playful and organic feel to the photos, while also serving as a backdrop that pops and makes the subjects of the photos stand out. The garden also provided ample opportunities for interesting compositions and perspectives, making for visually dynamic and engaging family photos.

One key aspect of a successful family photoshoot is to be well-prepared. This means making sure everyone is dressed in coordinated and comfortable clothing that complements the location and overall vibe of the photoshoot. It's also important to discuss the mood and feeling you want to convey in the photos so everyone can arrive with a shared understanding of the goals for the session.

Another key to a successful family photoshoot is to have fun. This might seem like a no-brainer, but it can be easy to get caught up in the pressure of creating "perfect" family photos. However, by keeping the mood light and playful, you'll get more genuine and spontaneous expressions and moments that truly capture the essence of your family.

During the family photoshoot, I made sure to take advantage of the unique and quirky environment by encouraging the family to interact with their surroundings. We explored different parts of the garden, taking breaks for snack time and even playing games, which resulted in some of the most candid and playful shots of the day.

Additionally, it's important to consider the lighting when planning your family photoshoot. The cactus garden offered a mix of sun and shade, which provided opportunities for both bright and airy outdoor portraits as well as more moody and intimate indoor-like shots. The key is to make the most of the available light and choose the right moments to take advantage of the best conditions.

Finally, don't be afraid to get creative with your family photos. Try incorporating props, using interesting perspectives, or playing with shadows and reflections. This not only adds visual interest to the photos but also helps to tell the story of your family and your unique personalities.

In conclusion, a family photoshoot is a wonderful opportunity to create lasting memories with your loved ones. By being well-prepared, having fun, making the most of your surroundings and being creative, you'll be sure to capture stunning and meaningful family photos that you'll cherish for years to come. If you're in the Bay Area and looking for a family photographer, I would be honored to capture these special memories for you.

As a Bay Area family photographer, I have had the privilege of capturing many beautiful sunset family photoshoots. There is something magical about the warm hues of the setting sun that creates an atmosphere of intimacy and joy during a family photoshoot. In this post, I'll be sharing some tips for having a successful and memorable family sunset photoshoot.

Family photography is about capturing the love, connection, and personalities of the people in the photos. When planning your family photoshoot, it's important to consider the time of day and location to ensure that you get the best possible light. Sunset is the perfect time for a family photoshoot, as the sun is low in the sky and creates a warm, golden light that is soft and flattering.

One of the key elements of a successful family photoshoot is choosing the right location. For a sunset photoshoot, I recommend finding a location with a beautiful view of the sunset. This will not only create a stunning backdrop for your photos, but will also add to the overall atmosphere of the shoot.

When it comes to attire, it's important to choose outfits that complement each other and the location. Neutral colors, such as white, cream, and navy, work well for family portraits and tend to create a cohesive look in photos. Consider incorporating patterns and textures to add some interest, but keep in mind that you want the focus to be on the faces and connection between the people in the photos, rather than the clothes.

Another important aspect of a successful family photoshoot is to have a clear plan for posing and interacting with each other. As a family photographer, I will guide you through the process and help you feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. Some fun and natural poses include walking together, holding hands, or sitting on a bench and snuggling.

It's also important to remember that family photos are meant to capture the authentic connection and emotions of your family. Don't be afraid to let loose and have fun during the photoshoot. Encourage your children to play, run, or dance and capture those candid moments as well. These moments will become cherished memories in your family photos.

Finally, don't forget to have fun! Family photoshoots can be a great opportunity to spend quality time with your loved ones and create memories that will last a lifetime. Encourage everyone to be present and enjoy the moment, and the results will be truly special family portraits.

In conclusion, a sunset family photoshoot is the perfect opportunity to capture the beauty and love of your family. By choosing the right location, attire, and poses, and having a clear plan for interacting with each other, you can ensure that your family photos will be stunning and memorable. As a Bay Area family photographer, I am passionate about capturing the special moments and connections that make families unique and I would be honored to be a part of your family photoshoot.
