Why Book a Newborn Session in the First 2 Weeks | San Jose Newborn Photographer

Ozlem Bal Herdem

Why Book a Newborn Session in the First 2 Weeks? | San Jose Newborn Photographer

If you’ve been searching for a newborn photographer in San Jose, you’ve probably heard the advice: “The best time for newborn photos is within the first 14 days.” But why is that two-week window so important? As a professional newborn photographer based in West San Jose, I’m here to explain why timing matters — and how booking early helps you capture your baby at their sleepiest, tiniest, and most snuggly stage.

1. Sleepy, Curled-Up Poses Are Easiest in the First 14 Days

During the first two weeks after birth, babies sleep deeply and often. This allows us to gently pose them into those sweet, womb-like positions you see in classic newborn portraits. Their muscles are still flexible, and they tend to stay curled up naturally — which makes it easier (and safer) to create soft, artistic images.

After about two weeks, babies begin to stretch out more and become more alert. While we can absolutely photograph older newborns, it’s harder to get the same sleepy poses, and sessions may take longer.

2. Baby Acne and Colic Often Develop Later

In the first week or two, your baby’s skin is usually smooth and free of blemishes. After that, many newborns begin to develop baby acne, cradle cap, or colic. While we can edit minor imperfections, photographing your baby earlier often results in more naturally clean and glowing skin — and a more peaceful, comfortable session.

3. You'll Be Grateful You Captured the Tiny Details

Newborns grow so fast — even within the first month. Booking your session in that early window helps you capture those tiny fingers, wrinkly toes, squishy cheeks, and that fresh newborn softness that fades almost overnight.

Clients often tell me they didn’t realize how quickly their baby would change — and they’re so grateful to have frozen that fleeting moment in time.

4. You’ll Be More Relaxed with a Plan in Place

When you book your newborn session while you're still pregnant, I pencil in your due date and hold space around that time. Once baby arrives, you simply reach out and we finalize your session date — typically within days 7–14.

Having your session planned ahead means one less thing to worry about during those sleepy, adjustment-filled first days of parenthood.

How to Choose a Maternity Photographer in San Jose | Find the Best Fit Near You

Ozlem Bal Herdem

How to Choose the Best Maternity Photographer in San Jose

Searching for a “maternity photographer near me” in San Jose? You’re not alone — pregnancy is one of the most meaningful seasons in life, and choosing the right photographer to document it is an important decision. With so many photographers in the Bay Area offering maternity sessions, it can feel overwhelming to know who to trust with such special memories.

As a San Jose maternity photographer with years of experience working with growing families, I’ve put together this guide to help you choose the best photographer for your style, needs, and comfort.

1. Look for a Style That Matches Your Vision

Every photographer has a unique artistic style — some prefer bold, dramatic imagery, while others (like myself) lean toward soft, natural, timeless tones. Browse their portfolios and ask yourself:

  • Do the images feel authentic and emotive?

  • Do you like their use of light, posing, and wardrobe?

  • Can you imagine yourself in those photos?

Your maternity photos should reflect you — your energy, your joy, your connection.

2. Check Experience and Expertise with Maternity Sessions

Not all photographers specialize in maternity photography. Look for someone who understands how to flatter your changing body, pose you comfortably, and create a calm, encouraging environment. Bonus if they also offer client wardrobe styling and newborn photography so you can continue the story later.

3. Consider Studio vs. Outdoor Options

In the San Jose area, you’ll find photographers offering both indoor and outdoor maternity sessions. Ask yourself what kind of setting feels most like you:

  • A cozy, styled studio session with soft lighting and a curated look?

  • Or a glowing outdoor session at golden hour in places like Vasona Park or Santa Teresa County Park?

Some photographers (like me!) offer both, so you can choose what feels best.

4. Read Reviews and Testimonials

Check their Google reviews or Yelp profile. Look for words like “comfortable,” “professional,” “patient,” and “beautiful photos.” How someone makes you feel during the session is just as important as the images themselves.

5. Ask About Wardrobe, Turnaround Time & Packages

A great maternity photographer will guide you through every step — from what to wear to how your images will be delivered. Ask questions like:

  • Do they provide wardrobe suggestions?

  • How long does it take to get edited photos?

  • What’s included in the package?

6. Go with Your Gut

This is an intimate, emotional chapter of your life — trust your instincts when it comes to who you feel comfortable with. You deserve someone who makes you feel celebrated, beautiful, and seen.

Looking for a maternity photographer in San Jose or nearby?

I’m based in West San Jose, and I specialize in natural, timeless maternity photography for families across Palo Alto, Los Gatos, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, and the Bay Area. Whether you prefer an elegant studio session or a golden hour outdoor shoot, I’m here to guide you with warmth, expertise, and a little magic.

San Jose Lifestyle Newborn Photographer | In-Home Newborn Photos

Ozlem Bal Herdem

San Jose Lifestyle Newborn Photographer | In-Home Newborn Photos

Welcoming your new baby into the world is one of life’s most beautiful and emotional experiences. As a San Jose lifestyle newborn photographer, I love capturing this chapter in the comfort of your own home — where everything is familiar, calm, and personal. In this post, I’m sharing highlights from a few recent in-home newborn sessions and why these relaxed lifestyle photos are so meaningful.

Lifestyle Newborn Sessions in San Jose Homes

Every family I meet has their own rhythm, their own space, and their own story. Photographing your newborn right in your home lets us preserve that story exactly as it is — with the nursery you spent months preparing, the light that fills your living room every morning, and the everyday surroundings that make your house a home.

These recent sessions were all captured in homes throughout San Jose, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto, and Los Gatos. I simply work with natural light and your family’s energy — no need for perfect rooms or fancy spaces. All I look for is a window with beautiful sunlight and a family ready to soak in the moment.

Why In-Home Newborn Photos Are So Special

One of the most common things my clients say is how relaxed they felt having their session at home. No rushing to get out the door, no packing a diaper bag, and no pressure to make everything look perfect. These sessions are baby-led — we pause for feedings, snuggles, and diaper changes as needed. It's calm, slow-paced, and centered on the beauty of real life.

Plus, in-home sessions give you the chance to capture what life really looked like in those first few days — the crib, the rocking chair, the cozy corners where you’ll spend countless hours.

What to Wear for Lifestyle Newborn Photos

Soft, neutral colors always photograph best in natural light. Think cozy knits, simple dresses, and anything that feels comfortable to move and cuddle in.

You don’t need to stress about dressing up — the goal is comfort, connection, and warmth. Let your love and closeness be the focus.

Scheduling Your In-Home Newborn Session

I recommend reaching out during your second or early third trimester so we can tentatively hold a spot around your due date. Once your baby arrives, just send me a message and we’ll set a date within the ideal window — usually between 7 and 21 days after birth.

Planning ahead gives us time to talk through the light in your home, wardrobe, and what to expect during the session. And when the day arrives, all you have to do is open the door — I’ll take care of the rest.

Serving Families Across San Jose & the Bay Area

I offer lifestyle newborn photography across San Jose and surrounding cities like Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Los Gatos, and Santa Clara. My approach is simple, warm, and baby-led — perfect for families who want heartfelt, natural portraits that reflect this fleeting season of life.

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photo Session in San Jose

Ozlem Bal Herdem

Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life's most precious milestones—and capturing those first days through newborn photography is something you'll treasure forever. As a San Jose-based newborn photographer, I know how important it is to make your session relaxed, safe, and beautiful. Here's everything you need to know to prepare for your newborn photo session so you can enjoy the experience stress-free!

1. Schedule Early
I recommend booking your newborn session during your second trimester to secure your spot. We’ll pencil in your due date, and once your little one arrives (early or late!), we’ll schedule the exact session date. Newborns are ideally photographed between 7–20 days after birth when they are still sleepy and curly.

2. Keep Baby Comfortable
A warm, cozy baby is a happy baby! Before your session, keep the baby’s diaper a little loose to avoid red marks and dress them in easy-to-remove clothing (like a simple zip-up sleeper). Feeding your baby right before the session helps them settle into a nice, sleepy state.

3. What to Bring

  • Extra bottles (if bottle-feeding)

  • Pacifiers (even if they don't usually take one)

  • A few extra diapers and wipes

  • A cozy swaddle blanket

  • Any sentimental items you'd like included (special blanket, heirloom toy)

4. What Parents and Siblings Should Wear

  • Stick to soft, neutral tones: white, cream, beige, soft pastels.

  • Avoid busy patterns or logos.

  • Moms often look beautiful in flowy dresses or simple knits (I offer a client closet too!).

  • Dads look great in neutral t-shirts, henleys, or casual button-downs.

  • Keep it simple and timeless—the focus should stay on your family's connection.

5. Relax and Trust the Process
Newborn sessions are very different from traditional portrait sessions. They move slowly to accommodate feeding, cuddling, and soothing. I have years of experience working with little ones, and I'll gently pose and guide everything so you can simply enjoy the experience.

6. In-Studio Comfort
At Twin Dragonflies Photography Studio in West San Jose, everything is set up to be warm, safe, and welcoming. I provide all the props, wraps, bonnets, and backgrounds needed for your baby's session, and you’ll have plenty of time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the session while I work my magic.

What to Wear for Family Photos in San Jose: Seasonal Style Guide

Ozlem Bal Herdem

One of the most common questions I get from families preparing for a photo session is: "What should we wear?" And it’s a great question—because your outfits truly set the tone and feel of your portraits. As a San Jose-based family photographer, I know how much the time of year, location, and lighting all play a role in what photographs best.

Whether you’re planning a golden hour session in the hills or a cozy studio shoot, here’s a seasonal guide to help you choose outfits that feel natural, timeless, and beautiful.

Spring

  • Think soft pastels, creams, light blues, blush, and sage green.

  • Flowing dresses for moms, button-ups or light knits for dads.

  • Neutral or tan shoes (avoid bright sneakers).

  • Add texture with knits, lace, or light layers.

  • Perfect for garden sessions (like Gamble Garden or cactus blooms at Stanford).

Summer

  • Light fabrics (linen, cotton) to stay cool and look effortless.

  • Colors: white, light beige, soft blues, dusty rose.

  • Barefoot is okay for grassy sessions!

  • Flowy maxi dresses, shorts for kids, rolled sleeves for dads.

  • Great for beachy or lake settings like Vasona Lake Park.

Fall

  • Warm tones: rust, mustard, olive, deep burgundy, navy.

  • Layers like cardigans, denim jackets, or boots.

  • Earthy textures: corduroy, wool, knits.

  • Works beautifully at golden hour in parks like Santa Teresa County Park.

Winter

  • Deep, cozy tones: forest green, cranberry, charcoal, cream.

  • Layer up: scarves, long coats, knit hats (especially for kids).

  • Velvet, thick knits, and faux fur photograph well.

  • Neutral, coordinated layers keep the look timeless.

Bonus Tips for Every Season:

  • Avoid large logos, neon colors, or super busy patterns.

  • Coordinate colors, but don’t match exactly.

  • Think in "color families" instead of identical tones.

  • Dress comfortably—kids move a lot, and you want to feel relaxed!

  • Lay your outfits out together before the session to see how they photograph as a group.

Need extra help choosing what to wear? I provide a complete Clothing Style Guide PDF. Whether you want light and airy or rich and cozy, I’ll help you style the session perfectly.

Top Outdoor Photo Locations in San Jose & Bay Area

Ozlem Bal Herdem

As a family and newborn photographer based in West San Jose, I often get asked about the best outdoor locations for photography sessions. Whether you're planning a maternity shoot, family portraits, or even a first birthday milestone, choosing the right spot can make all the difference. The Bay Area offers a variety of beautiful backdrops that change with the seasons — from redwood groves to blooming gardens and golden hillsides. Here are five of my favorite outdoor photography locations for families in and around San Jose:

1. Redwood Grove Nature Preserve – Los Altos
This peaceful little forest is filled with towering redwoods and quiet shaded trails — perfect for families who love a natural, earthy setting. The light filters through the trees beautifully, creating a cozy, magical vibe. It works year-round and is especially lovely for intimate family or maternity sessions.

2. Vasona Lake County Park – Los Gatos
A classic location for family photos! With wide-open grassy fields, lakeside views, and tree-lined paths, Vasona is ideal for playful, candid sessions — especially with younger kids. The golden hour light here is stunning, and there’s room for everyone to move, play, and just be themselves.

3. Arizona Cactus Garden – Stanford University
This unique spot is full of character! The cactus garden offers something a little different — desert textures, earthy tones, and interesting light. It’s a favorite for maternity and couple sessions, especially if you want something artistic and outside the typical green park setting.

4. Elizabeth Gamble Garden – Palo Alto
A dreamy, romantic setting with blooming flowers, classic pathways, and soft natural light. Perfect for springtime sessions or anything a bit more elegant. It’s great for maternity, motherhood portraits, or a styled family session with a refined look.

5. Santa Teresa County Park – South San Jose
This park offers a rustic, golden California landscape — rolling hills, long dry grass, and wide open skies. It’s peaceful and quiet, especially around golden hour, and gives that iconic Bay Area feel. Perfect for families who love a more natural, relaxed environment.

If you're unsure which location fits your family best, I’m always happy to help guide you. I know the best hidden corners at each spot so we can avoid crowds and focus on creating timeless, heartfelt portraits of your family.

San Jose Lifestyle Newborn Photographer | Preparing for Your In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Session

Ozlem Bal Herdem

Newborn Lifestyle Photos at Home

Bringing a new life into this world is an extraordinary journey, and the first few weeks with your newborn are truly magical. Capturing these precious moments is essential, and what better way to do it than with a lifestyle newborn session right in the comfort of your own home? As a San Jose lifestyle newborn photographer, I've had the privilege of documenting countless beautiful moments for families in the Bay Area. In this blog post, I'll guide you through how to prepare for your in-home lifestyle newborn session.

1. Choose the Right Photographer

First and foremost, selecting the right photographer is crucial. You'll want someone experienced in lifestyle newborn photography who understands the unique dynamics of working in your home. Look for a photographer in the Bay Area with a portfolio that resonates with your vision, and ensure that they have a reputation for capturing the essence of family life.

2. Schedule Your Session Wisely

The best time to schedule your in-home lifestyle newborn session is within the first two weeks after your baby's birth. During this period, your little one is still in the sleepy, curled-up stage, making it ideal for capturing those adorable, cuddly shots. Be sure to book your session well in advance to secure a spot during this narrow window.

3. Prepare the Nursery and Living Spaces

Before your photographer arrives, tidy up your home, especially the nursery and the living spaces where you plan to take photos. Keep it simple and clutter-free to allow the focus to remain on your family and your newborn. Soft, neutral tones and natural light work best for creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

4. Keep Your Baby Comfortable

A happy and content baby is the key to successful lifestyle newborn photos. Ensure your baby is well-fed and has had a fresh diaper change before the session begins. It's also a good idea to keep the room comfortably warm, as babies tend to be more relaxed in a cozy environment.

5. Plan Family Outfits

Coordinate your family's outfits in a way that complements your home's color scheme. Neutrals and pastels often work beautifully in lifestyle newborn photos. You don't need to be too matchy-matchy; just make sure your clothing choices are comfortable and reflect your personal style.

6. Personalize the Session

One of the most remarkable aspects of in-home lifestyle newborn photography is the personal touch you can add. Incorporate meaningful items such as heirloom blankets, baby books, or toys that have sentimental value. These will not only enhance the authenticity of your photos but also provide a heartwarming touch to the memories you're creating.

7. Relax and Enjoy the Moment

Once your photographer arrives, take a deep breath, and relax. The beauty of lifestyle newborn photography lies in its candid nature. Embrace the moments as they unfold naturally. Play with your baby, cuddle, and let the photographer capture the genuine connections and emotions within your family.

8. Be Open to Suggestions

Your photographer may offer guidance on posing, lighting, and locations within your home. Be open to their suggestions, as they have a keen eye for what works best in each unique setting. However, don't be afraid to express your ideas and preferences as well.

9. Embrace Imperfection

Lifestyle newborn photography isn't about perfection; it's about capturing the raw and authentic moments of your family's life. Don't worry if your baby cries or if the room isn't perfectly arranged. Those candid, imperfect moments often result in the most beautiful photos.

In-home lifestyle newborn sessions offer an intimate and genuine way to document the first moments of your baby's life. As a San Jose lifestyle newborn photographer, I'm dedicated to capturing these priceless moments for your family. The Bay Area is teeming with unique homes, stories, and beautiful families. I'm excited to create a memorable session that showcases the love, connection, and wonder that comes with welcoming a new addition to your family.

If you're in the Bay Area and looking to schedule your own lifestyle newborn session, please don't hesitate to reach out. I would be honored to be part of your journey as you embark on this incredible chapter in your family's life.

How to Prepare for Your Outdoor Family Photo Session | San Jose Family Photographer

As your San Jose family photographer, I want my clients to have enough information to help them feel prepared before the day we take photos. So in this post, I’ll tell you how to prepare for your outdoor family photography session in San Jose!

One of my main priorities for your lifestyle family photo session is to keep everything as simple and as stress-free as possible! I think having enough info ahead of time can help cut down on the stress and anxiety leading up to your photo session.

What do we wear?

KEEP IT SIMPLE AND COMFORTABLE

Please do not make yourself crazy trying to buy everyone new matching outfits in the weeks and days leading up to your session! I always tell moms to check your closets first! There is a good chance you already own the “perfect” outfits. And if you really feel the need to buy something, then go ahead and get a new outfit for yourself.

I always encourage families to put comfort first. I prefer that you dress closer to what you dress like the other 364 days of the year rather than dressing up way more than you usually do.

Some tips…

-please avoid matchy-matchy clothing. (aka everyone in white shirts and khaki pants or jeans) Instead, pick a color palette of 3 or 4 coordinating colors. I will also send you the clothing style guide and some Pinterest links to help you.

-Limit patterns like florals, stripes, and plaids to one or two family members and put everyone else in a solid color.

-Avoid clothing with large logos or characters and avoid neon/fluorescent colors.

-Layers are great when the temps are cooler.

And once again, put comfort over fashion. I don’t want your son annoyed by an itchy sweater or tie he would not normally wear or your daughter fussing over uncomfortable shoes or a dress she is not used to. And if they do wear a dress or skirt, I recommend they also wear shorts under it.

Or in my case, do not make your husband and sons wear pastel button-down shirts and khakis (or a suit jacket etc.) if they never actually wear these things in real life! (they still bring this up 5 years later!)

I even encourage allowing your kids to help make some choices when it comes to what they will be wearing!

Talk about the family photo shoot

Weeks before your portraits, you can get your family excited for your big photo day.  You can tell your kids how fun it’s going to be and why it’s so special and important to have your family photos taken.  Another great idea is to have your family try on the clothes before the big day.  You can even make a game out of it and pretend to be models on the catwalk!  Make sure the clothes fit properly and are comfortable.  On the day of the shoot, ensure the kids are well-rested and have full tummies.

Get ready to play games during the photo shoot!

This is the most important tip of all!  No matter if your outfits are Pinterest-perfect, if you have the most magical lighting, or you are in a jaw-dropping location, none of it will matter if the children are miserable and not enjoying themselves.  So, get ready to be silly.  Have some games ready for the kids and parents to play.  This may include playing tag, throwing leaves, or singing their favorite songs.  The games will lighten the mood and keep the kids entertained and smiling.  A thrilling aspect of family photography is capturing the family interacting with each other.  Not every photo has to have each member of the family looking straight at the camera.

Should we bring anything?

Although I encourage you to feed everyone before the session, feel free to bring a snack and a drink for your child(ren), especially for the little ones. It is more than ok to pause for a few minutes, especially if it is a hot day or they just need to take a short break. Just maybe don’t mention said snacks to the children and just surprise them when they are needed.

If you have a little one, it’s ok to bring your stroller along to shove the diaper bag in (make sure to have diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes because we know babies can have blowouts at the least opportune times!)

The stroller is also a great place to stash your keys and cell phones! Let’s avoid having your pockets bulging with phones and keys!

And it’s okay to let your child bring along a favorite toy or blanket that they are attached to. I think this will help keep them calm and I would love to include this special item in the photos! And having their favorite stuffed animal, toy car, etc. can also help me get some smiles out of the little ones.

So, relax, I’ve photographed hundreds of families and I assure you that our session will be fun. And I promise you that you’ll treasure the memories that I will capture for you!

Bay Area, CA Newborn Photographer | Studio Newborn Session VS In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Session

As a Bay Area, CA newborn photographer, I understand that choosing the right type of photography for your newborn can be a difficult decision. The two main options are posed photography and in-home lifestyle photography. Both options have their unique benefits, and the decision ultimately depends on the style of photography you prefer and what you want to capture.

Posed Newborn Photography: Posed newborn photography is a more traditional style of photography where the baby is posed in various positions and often uses props and backdrops. This type of photography is done in a studio setting with controlled lighting and temperature to create a specific look and feel. Posed photography is best for parents who want a more formal and stylized look for their newborn photos. These images tend to be highly edited and have a professional appearance.

In-Home Lifestyle Photography: In-home lifestyle photography captures natural and candid moments between the baby and their family in the comfort of their own home. This type of photography is less formal and more relaxed, capturing the baby in their natural environment. In-home lifestyle photography is best for parents who want to capture genuine moments and emotions between their baby and family. The images are often more raw and organic, highlighting the natural beauty of the newborn and their family.

Ultimately, the decision between posed and in-home lifestyle photography comes down to personal preference. As a professional newborn photographer, I can work with you to determine which option is best for you and your family. I can provide samples of both styles, discuss the differences in the shooting process and final product, and help you make an informed decision. No matter which style you choose, I will work to create beautiful and timeless images that you and your family will treasure for years to come.

San Carlos, CA Family Photographer | Fall Family Photos in San Jose

Welcome to my blog, where I'll be sharing tips and ideas for what to wear for your family photography session.

Family photography is an excellent way to capture beautiful moments with your loved ones. Whether it's for a family photoshoot or family portraits, having the perfect outfit can make all the difference in the final result.

If you're planning a fall family photoshoot in Bay Area it's important to keep in mind the weather conditions. San Jose's autumn is generally mild, but it can still get chilly during early morning or evening hours. So, it's best to layer your clothing to ensure your family stays warm and comfortable.

To begin with, you want to select a color palette that will complement each other's outfits. A popular choice for fall family photos is to go with warm tones such as burgundy, burnt orange, mustard, navy, or forest green. The key is to choose colors that look good on everyone and complement the surroundings.

For parents, a solid colored blouse or dress, paired with jeans or khaki pants, can make for a classic look. Moms can accessorize with statement jewelry and a scarf to add a pop of color to the outfit. Dads can complete their look with a blazer or sweater, which adds an extra layer of warmth and sophistication.

For children, it's best to keep it simple and comfortable. A cute sweater or dress with leggings for girls, and a collared shirt or polo with jeans for boys, make for a timeless look. Avoid any bold patterns or logos that may distract from the family's overall aesthetic.

Footwear is also an essential part of the outfit. For fall family photos, closed-toe shoes or boots work best. For moms, low ankle boots or flats are a great option. For dads and children, brown or black leather shoes work well and complete their outfits.

Lastly, hair and makeup should also be considered. Keeping it simple and natural is always best. Moms can wear their hair down or in a classic bun, while dads can have a clean-shaven look or trimmed facial hair. Children should have neat and tidy hair.

In conclusion, choosing the right clothing and accessories for your San Jose family photo shoot can make all the difference in the final result. Remember to select a color palette that complements each other's outfits, dress in layers, wear comfortable footwear, and keep hair and makeup simple. With these tips in mind, you'll be sure to capture beautiful memories that you'll cherish for years to come.
