Top Outdoor Photo Locations in San Jose & Bay Area

As a family and newborn photographer based in West San Jose, I often get asked about the best outdoor locations for photography sessions. Whether you're planning a maternity shoot, family portraits, or even a first birthday milestone, choosing the right spot can make all the difference. The Bay Area offers a variety of beautiful backdrops that change with the seasons — from redwood groves to blooming gardens and golden hillsides. Here are five of my favorite outdoor photography locations for families in and around San Jose:

1. Redwood Grove Nature Preserve – Los Altos
This peaceful little forest is filled with towering redwoods and quiet shaded trails — perfect for families who love a natural, earthy setting. The light filters through the trees beautifully, creating a cozy, magical vibe. It works year-round and is especially lovely for intimate family or maternity sessions.

2. Vasona Lake County Park – Los Gatos
A classic location for family photos! With wide-open grassy fields, lakeside views, and tree-lined paths, Vasona is ideal for playful, candid sessions — especially with younger kids. The golden hour light here is stunning, and there’s room for everyone to move, play, and just be themselves.

3. Arizona Cactus Garden – Stanford University
This unique spot is full of character! The cactus garden offers something a little different — desert textures, earthy tones, and interesting light. It’s a favorite for maternity and couple sessions, especially if you want something artistic and outside the typical green park setting.

4. Elizabeth Gamble Garden – Palo Alto
A dreamy, romantic setting with blooming flowers, classic pathways, and soft natural light. Perfect for springtime sessions or anything a bit more elegant. It’s great for maternity, motherhood portraits, or a styled family session with a refined look.

5. Santa Teresa County Park – South San Jose
This park offers a rustic, golden California landscape — rolling hills, long dry grass, and wide open skies. It’s peaceful and quiet, especially around golden hour, and gives that iconic Bay Area feel. Perfect for families who love a more natural, relaxed environment.

If you're unsure which location fits your family best, I’m always happy to help guide you. I know the best hidden corners at each spot so we can avoid crowds and focus on creating timeless, heartfelt portraits of your family.
